If you were a fashion designer, would you like your designs to be copied and sold for less? It's been going on for ages in the fashion industry, but now it seems that some designers are trying to do something about it. According to an article in the New York Times, the Council of Fashion Designers of America are lobbying to have a new anti-copying law for the fashion industry. Designers that are fighting for this new law include Diane Von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez and Zac Posen.
I'm somewhat divided on this issue. Fashion is such a subjective industry. Many fashion designers find inspiration from past fashion trends, so would they be considered in violation of copying someone else's design? As a jewelry designer, I draw inspiration from other jewelry designers and sometimes copy their designs, but I don't use the same exact materials and I don't try to sell it on Ebay using the other, more famous designer's name. I can understand if a company or another designer copied the same exact style and used the same exact material.
People who make counterfeit Louis Vuitton and Kate Spade purses - yes, they should be prosecuted for copying another's designs and passing them off like they are originals.
If this law passed, it would make the fashion industry that much more complicated.
