We've all been taught not to judge a book by its cover, but that's a hard rule to live by in the fashion industry. As a designer, buyer, CEO, or whomever, you want to represent the company the best you can. You attend fashion shows or tradeshows and you want to look head to toe fabulous, right?
As for me, I have made myself a walking ad campaign for my jewelry business and everywhere I go, whether it be to the grocery store or running out to get a bit to eat, I wear my jewelry. You just never know who you're going to run into!
It's hard not to do, judge people by the way they look or dress, especially in the fashion industry. Joan Rivers made a career out of it!
However, I have to say, if you have true beauty within, it will shine so bright - brighter than all that "bling" you have on that people can't help but love you :)
I love to look great, and yes, you're right, people really do judge you by your appearance. But, you're maybe forgeting something: If you look great, you feel great. I'm always much more cheerful when wearing my Manolos!
