Virginia Postrel wrote an article on Project Runway that tells us that yes, fashion is a business - and it's a darn good business too! What industry do you know of that changes at lightning speed? And everyone will always need clothes (unless we go back to the days of Adam and Eve...highly unlikely).
Just by watching Project Runway I've learned that fashion is not all as glamourous as society makes it out to be. It's like any business, there's the stress of timelines, working in teams, creating budgets, and the like. It may even be tougher than any business because the designer essentially needs to constantly be creative or they may "be out" next season. In addition to being a designer, you have to be business-minded as well. That's why I think Chloe won last season.
Project Runway definitely gave me the inspiration to keep going with my jewelry design. If you have the will, determination, and perserverance, I think you can definitely succeed in the fashion industry - or any business for that matter!
