When I first started making jewelry, many people told me that I should start a jewelry business. I thought it was a good idea because I did want to work for myself, but the business-minded side of me knew that I couldn't just start a business without having a mission statement - a reason for selling my jewelry (besides the obvious - making money).
I've heard from other friends that when they started their fashion or art business, the fun in the process of creating turned obsolete. Designing was no longer a hobby and somehow lost its appeal. I didn't want this to happen to me, so I had to think of a compelling mission for my business. Something that would give me more meaning in my work and drive me to do more. It then dawned on me to incorporate my life mission, "Creating a Beautiful World, One Person at a Time", and apply it to my new jewelry venture.
So for you fashion designers thinking about taking that leap into the fashion industry, sit down and really think about your vision and what your mission statement will say about you.
