Frida Giannini, the successor to Tom Ford, is taking Gucci on another
journey. A journey back to all that is classy, all that is creative, and all that is simply Gucci. Not that I didn't like Tom Ford's idea of sexiness, but all this "sex sells" business is getting quite old. Gucci's new look is quite refreshing - joyful and playful.
And it looks like consumers like the new vision as well. Since the departure of Tom Ford, revenues were $2.25 billion in 2005 compared to $1.75 billion in 2003.*
Fashion editors may call Gucci's new collections "commercial" and go as far to ask the question "Is Frida the one to save Gucci?", but sales don't lie. Gucci isn't in any kind of trouble of dropping as a fashion brand. In fact, I think Ms. Giannini just took Gucci to a whole 'nother level.
