So while every designer wants to be the next household name, it's not surprising that few have what it takes. Designers held about 17,000 jobs in the United States in 2004, but only about 25 percent were self-employed. About 15 percent worked for wholesalers or cut-and-sew apparel manufacturing, and the rest slaved away at big fashion houses. "
