In the bookstore today, I discovered two interesting fashion/lifestyle
magazines that you can't get at your local supermarket:
1) Bust: For Women With Something To Get Off Their Chests
This magazine had a few glossy ads, but mainly from indie companies; a good mix of articles about crafting, fashion, culture, celebrity interviews, etc. There was an interview with Tukiwe Amina Mbewe, who said something that most fashionistas strive for and is worth noting here:
"I want people to know me for my fashion"
However, let me just add that there is more to a fashionista than just fashion...
2) Bitch: Feminist Response To Pop Culture
(FYI: You can't find this magazine at Amazon!) Produces articles by writers in a straight-forward fashion, without all the fluff of glossy adverts. Here's a little blurb of an article by Judy Berman that analyzes fashion blogs and had me thinking about other fashion blogs I've been reading as of late:
"...offering rigid daily scrutiny of celebrities' fashion choices...can be good...but in the end it only serves to reinforce what fashion magazines have been telling us for decades...We don't need a brave new technological world to tell us that."
