Wouldn't it be great if every single person just expressed themselves by wearing what they like...wearing what is comfortable versus what looks good...instead of relying on fashion magazines and the media to tell them what they should wear? What if there wasn't such a thing as a fashion magazine? What if celebrities wore togas and walked barefoot? What would people wear? When did we become obsessed with fashion and wearing what everyone else is wearing?
Well, we can certainly attribute the desire of wanting to wear what others are wearing to the social stigma of "belonging". Which is not to say that wanting to belong is necessarily wrong. We are human beings that thrive on the sense of community. But somehow we get brainwashed into thinking that our looks will give us the ticket into the "cool crowd". This probably applies to many "youngsters" today under the influence of traditional media.
However, as we grow older, many of us still seek the approval of others. We can't help it - it's something that is conditioned since childhood. We go through life wanting people to like us, so if we dress like them, they'll like us, right?
These are thoughts that came to me today as I stared at the stack of fashion magazines that are waiting to be read. Conde Naste has made a pretty penny off me and just about every fashion diva on this earth. Well, I'm off to check out what I should be wearing this spring ;)
