Yesterday I visited the Mingei Museum located in Balboa Park, home to all things art here in San Diego. I often used to visit when I lived downtown, but now that I've become a suburbanite I don't get down there much often.
I've heard so many things about the Mingei Museum, particularly, the jewelry exhibits. This time around there is jewelry on display that spans about five continents and shows us what jewelry people have worn throughout history. One thing I learned is that people from other countries love their jewelry big! Also, some jewelry was worn more for function than for aesthetic reasons. The museum tour guide showed me a piece that looks like your regular necklace with a bunch of charms hanging from it, but actually one of the charms is an abacus. You can read more about the exhibit here.![]()
And when the tour guide and guard weren't looking, I stole a picture of this piece that I think is gorgeous...
I also took these pictures of little dolls in a dollhouse that came from the 1800's(?) Imagine wearing a big dress like that!![]()
