Is this what you think when you hear about Payless - that they're just a store that carries cheap shoes? This is what I think. I usually buy cheap-o sandals there during the summer. Some of Payless's sandals that are made of leather are actually pretty cute. 
Now that Matt Rubel has taken over as CEO, he's making changes to make the brand more contemporary and fashion forward. This fall the company will come out with a line of shoes by New York designer, Laura Poretzy, called Abaete. However, there's the challenge to keep the shoes affordable for the core customer. Will the company succeed? Time will only tell...

Before I became somewhat stricter on shoes, I tried on some Payless styles (I think my feet were wider at a certain weight fluctuation point and I was desperate to try everything to find cute shoes), and they didn't feel as comfortable.
In a word: cheap. My cousin swears by Payless, and my BFF says they have some regular brands. But I don't trust the store at all.
