Pop Culture and the media have done a great job of brainwashing us into buying into their ideas of what's "in", "cool", "hip", and "trendy". Frankly, I'm sick of reading all these articles telling me that "Oh, this is the new trend!". Heck, I admit that I, too, have gone that route here at The Runway Scoop. No more, my dear fashion friend.
This weekend I reflected on the fashion industry and wondered why people feel the need to follow the crowd. Perhaps my background in psychology spurred these philosophical thoughts. Why? why? Why? I kept asking myself. Why do we listen to someone just because they're labeled a fashion expert? When did our individuality and sense of identities get twisted?
I asked and the answers came...via Almost Girl in an excellent post titled "Authority in The Fashion Industry: 'Knowing The Good'" where Julie says:
"It is a troubling notion to definitively say what is or isn’t fashionable, trendy, or for that matter in style. Fashion is an aesthetic profession which means in the end all choices are somewhat subjective."
Each and every one of us was born with our own creativity and sense of style. It is what makes us unique and it saddens me that some of us lose that genius within us. Who is to say that I am right and you are wrong? It's like saying vanilla is better than chocolate or Monet's paintings are more beautiful than Van Gogh's.
Even more answers came in today's post at Counterfeit Chic. Susan Scafidi shares with us why "Human See, Human Do" as it relates to why people follow trends. Is it indeed because we're "human" that we need to follow others, or is it Western Society that does this?
