Last month I mentioned that companies like Neiman Marcus, Saks, and
Bloomingdale's were downsizing their petite departments. Well, there was an uproar from Saks' petite customers, so the retailer is bringing back the department. This coming November, petite sizes will return to 32 of its 55 stores and will carry a wide assortment of styles. Previously, Saks focused too much on carrying suits for petite women, when realistically, women were wearing more knitwear and day dresses to work.
I knew the elimination of the petite departments wouldn't last very long. So many women shopped at these upscale stores for so long and were soon alienated by a department store that they were so loyal too. Dana Buchman said this in a New York Times article:
"My mission as a designer is to dress the women of America," she said. "If I am not making clothes for women 5-foot-4 or smaller I am not succeeding."
Update: I forgot to mention Designer Ella's thoughts on this....check them out here...
