I just came across Andrea Tung's blog, Making Things, via Final Fashion where she offers some tips for newbies in the fashion industry. This is a condensed version of her post.
1. Be Prepared. You may think you are, not often times there may be things you overlooked.
2. Divide and Conquer. You may be able to do everything at first and you begin to think that you don't need the help, but you do!
3. Time is your enemy. You may think you could spare time to do things the long way instead of spending more time to develop a shorter one.
4. Plan B. You always have to think ahead and prepare for failure.
5. Do your homework. I can't stress this enough. Often you may think you have the edge over your competitors, but you need to be on target, especially if you're new.6. Remain Calm. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed, this will prevent you from be productive, or worse, your hair will fall out.
7. Ask and Ye Shall Receive. Don't be stuck up and act as if you know everything.
8. Thunder-Stealers Beware. You know you have a good thing when people are sending you emails to be your business partner. You'd be surprised how gutsy people are to write these strange emails. Just press "delete"
9. Network it, Baby. You must keep your business cards on you at times when you leave the house.10. Get Back to Work. You're your own boss now, but you better be disciplined. Don't procrastinate.
My thoughts:
I totally agree with #6,7,9, and 10 - especially #9. Speak up and let people know what you do! That's how people get to know you. However, I don't necessarily agree with #8. There are some legitimate offers from people who really have an interest in what you do. Connecting and partnering with others increases your exposure much faster, especially if the other person is hard working like you ;)
