Jacqueline Palank of The Washington Times reports that members of Congress debated the fashion copyright issue this past week. The bill was introduced in March by Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte, Virginia Republican, which would allow fashion designers to have three years of copyright protection for their apparel and accessory designs. Proponents say that the bill will benefit young designers and small businesses while opponents claim that innovation in fashion happens when there is inspiration from other designs. Hmmm...I would say that innovation happens when you have something totally different from other designs.
According to the article the counterfeit goods industry (yes, it is now an industry!) has cost companies between $200 and $250 billion each year.
Susan Scafidi of Counterfeit Chic testified in favor of the bill and will be letting us in on the inside scoop soon!
