First it was Second Life, now it's There.com - virtual places to dress
your avatar and give yourself a makeover. In an effort to market the fashion side of their website, There.com is sponsoring a virtual runway show and contest called the “Fashion Challenge” where contestants will participate to become the next Stella McCartney or Marc Jacobs of the online designer community.
There.com has selected 12 finalists and you can watch video of the first challenge and get updates on the challenges by visiting: http://www.therefashionchallenge.com/ The top three designers get to take home these goodies: Dell laptop, an Apple iPod, and a Sony Playstation Portable. All of the contestants will be able to sell their designs to the There community. Every week members will vote for their favorite designer using these criteria:
- The overall creativity displayed in the designs

- Each designer's unique approach to the task
- The details the designers put into their clothing textures
I would have to say that this is a pretty novel idea and if I had any graphic design skills I would probably participate myself. Perhaps Designer Ella would be interested? For fun I created my own avatar at Yahoo! Fun times. With so many fashionistas participating in online communities, pretty soon will be seeing all these avatars popping up all over the place. If you can't look great all the time in real life, why not look great online instead?

FWIW, There.com launched back in 2003, around the same time Second Life did. Unfortunately the company had some problems but it's since been revived with new ownership.
