Kathleen Fasanella of Fashion Incubator asks for our experience, advice, or opinions on the use of petite models and I thought I'd give my two cents...
YES! It's about time that short people be represented in the fashion industry. I don't know who started this "standard" of model height, but it most certainly needs to be changed. There are so many ways to make short people look tall nowadays, so there shouldn't be any reason that an aspiring model who is 5'2" and has the skills can't be a model.
At NewModels.com I read this statement:
"This is a business, it isn’t about what you want or what’s fair, it’s about what he marketplace wants. And for the most part the market doesn’t want short models."
Now the question is, how do we change the way the "marketplace" thinks?

I've been told that I could be a model before. I just replied that I was so short (and had acne, I was a teen). I sure was skinny though, so that helped the opinion.
I know someone who was once a Petites model, but my friend told me I'm too short for even that. That's not right (I'm 4'11", but I think that just makes me a great representative of petite).
So do you want just short models for Petites or short models? I say short models, too! Then the 4'11"s can maybe be Petites models! :-)
