Thoughts on Short Models

Kathleen Fasanella of Fashion Incubator asks for our experience, advice, or opinions on the use of petite models and I thought I'd give my two cents...

YES!  It's about time that short people be represented in the fashion industry.  I don't know who started this "standard" of model height, but it most certainly needs to be changed.  There are so many ways to make short people look tall nowadays, so there shouldn't be any reason that an aspiring model who is 5'2" and has the skills can't be a model.

At NewModels.com I read this statement:

"This is a business, it isn’t about what you want or what’s fair, it’s about what he marketplace wants.  And for the most part the market doesn’t want short models."

Now the question is, how do we change the way the "marketplace" thinks?

I've been told that I could be a model before. I just replied that I was so short (and had acne, I was a teen). I sure was skinny though, so that helped the opinion.

I know someone who was once a Petites model, but my friend told me I'm too short for even that. That's not right (I'm 4'11", but I think that just makes me a great representative of petite).

So do you want just short models for Petites or short models? I say short models, too! Then the 4'11"s can maybe be Petites models! :-)

im 5'4 and models are usually 5'9 ..and i want to be a model but i was told by my doctor i wasnt goin to grow much more than wht i am maybe 2, 3 cm more... i hate it!

I WISH shorter models would be in demand! I have been scouted multiple times, typically while wearing heels, only to be told that at 5'6 I'm too short.

The thing is, it's more efficient for modeling agencies to invest in tall girls because they do well in both print and runway--not just print (whereas petite models typically are confined to print). Additionally, a lot of clothes fit tall girls better.

I think its a great idea having short models, it gives them the opportunities that tall models have. Plus when women go to stores to buy product there is more of a higher percentage of shorter people buying then taller. I work in retail and I'm going to tell you I rarely see a 5'10 to 6'2 girl come in my store and this store is expensive. So Once again its a GREAT idea having short models!!! Good Luck.

I think it would be a Fantastic idea for Short Run Way Modeling, their are alot of Georgus short women. I'm 5'2 and have every capability of being a ranway model. I may not have long skinny legs, but i have short skinny sexy legs and a nice athletic body. Their are alot of short Beautiful women that i know can be just as good as the tall runway modeling. It would be a Fantastic opportunity for us Georgus sexy Nice Fit Short women. Its One of my Burning Fashions to be a Short Runway Model,
Always: Mercedez

I have always wished i could grow just 6 more inches, but im 5'2 and will be that way forever and have learned to deal with it. But I do think there should be short models, because most women are NOT 5'11 and short girls deserve the opportunity as well. It kind of discriminating against shorter or even average sized women.

I'm a short guy and want to model but like women we are looked at the same SHORTNESS shouldn't be an issue. I'm gonna be in photography though.

I am 4'11, and always wanted to be a model. I have all the potential to be one but someone always says that I am way to short for modeling. What if they were to say that tall people cant model. Just think how that makes us short people feel. Everybody should be able to do what they dream of doing, and not what somebody says you can or cant do! I love modeling and dreamed of it since I was a little girl. So im pretty sure that there is many short woman out there that feel the same way, and something should be done about it! Its descrimination against a certain type of people and its not right!!!!!!!!!!

I am sooo damn pissed that someone says that I cant be a model because of my height!!!!!!!!

They need to have a market for all types of people who want to be a model!!!! STOP stopping people from chasing their dreams. Every single person deserves a chance to do what they want to do in life without anybody stepping in the way!

someone needs to step up and make a strong point to whoever is saying short people cant model. Its about time that we step up and show them that we can do the exact same thing that tall woman can or maybe even better!

I want to be a model, so let me be one!!!!!!!!!!

Do you remember your parents saying that you can be anything you want to be if you just put your mind to it????????????? Well wasnt there one thing that you always dreamed about, and you would never stop thinking about it until you at least gave it a shot, or knew for sure that you didnt want that dream anymore? Well I am a person who still wants my childhood dream and there are many more like me!

I was always told if i wanted to be a model my parents would back me up 100% just finding a place that wants a 5'1" model is hard. For a short person i am all legs, it helps but I still don't get any jobs...

We short people need to band together and form an agency for NORMAL women, short people buy just as much as the tall scrawny amazon women, so why not represent us?

Heres my thoughts, if overweight people are scouted for shows like "America's Next Top Model" so that they can represent the overweight population, then why not have short models? I mean weight is something that most people are able to control and we still cater to it in the fashion industry so why not cater to something that people cannot control, like their height!

There should be short models..

I mean theres tall skinny models, tall curvy models.
they only reason they have curvy models is because everyone says 'dont discriminate' but then they say short people cant be models! thats the same as saying curvy people cant.. and yet curvy people ARE models as long as theyre TALL.

it drives me insane. btw Im 5'3". grr

» Thoughts On Short Models Part 2 from TheRunwayScoop
To this day I still get quite a few comments from a post I did awhile back about short models.  If only the fashion industry would take notice!  They say that clothing looks "better" on tall models, but with all... [Read More]

Yeah, same here. I'm 5'1". I can't even do petite modeling because to be a petite model, I have to be not old short but skinny. I'm not skinny. If my waist was only a few inches smaller, I'd have the exact measurements as Sophia Loren (My goal body shape). Sophia Loren was not a small woman, at least by today's standards. I might be able to do some swimsuit modeling but that's a bit iffy too because some places for swimsuit modeling have height requirements too.

I plan to go into fashion and if I ever make it, I will make it a point to go searching specifically for short models, even for runway. As long as they fit my vision and fit my clothes, I'll put them in my show. I may get ridiculed in the long-run by the fashion industry but it's my vision and no one is going to take it away from me.

I think that what all these girls are talking about is true ive wanted to be a runway model since I was a little girl. Im 5'2 and I dont think im going to get any taller. Most of my friends are no taller than 5'5. If some how a group of girls could get together and start a modeling agency for short girls I would be the first one to jump and want to be part of it. Im tired of just seeing tall girls take over the runway its our turn for us short girls if anyone is interested please email me at nicksname1013@aol.com please we need to start now and doing something positive.

I am 4'10 and come weighing in at shocking 70lbs.
No ribs are poking out or anything, im completely proportioned. I always wanted to do modeling, but as the market only calls for taller women, us shorter women are left behind. I am currently in college for fashion photography. But would love also to be on the other side of the camera.

I think petite models should definitley be considered. Everyone is beautiful in different ways and it needs to be expressed. I am petite and i want to be a model, especially for petite girls.

true...I am really angry about the fact that only tall models get chose...not short

is it possible to get petite celebs to do runway shows? i mean, petite celebs also look gorgeous on the red carpet, people like natalie portman, chritina arguilera, hayden panettiere... that way petite people can relate better and the fashion people can get away with being ridiculed to use models with unconventional height?

I agree with everyone, the modelling industry should not focus on someones height. The average height for a woman is 5"3 or 5"4 so why do clothing companies use completely unrealistic representations of reality to try and make the public buy their products. I am 5"4 and im attractive and small, i can also take a damn good picture but because of my height i cannot be a model....i just dont understand where this necessity for people to be tall came from! Its not a fair representation of the clothes market and it really is causing serious insecurity issues for people and their bodies, we need to stop this insanity before everyone is 90lbs and malnutritioned!

I've been scouted before. with a real interest in pursuing a fashion career, only to be told that at 5'4, modeling is not a career for me. Yet, most clothes are targeted at shorter women, the majority of America. Then why would never see a "short" model for people to relate with? Ridgidness in the sense of a model is tall, thin, and drop-dead beautiful.

Yet, models are a kind of "ideal beauty". If you had a short model going down the runway, it would take away fashion's "look". Or thats what they say. People would like to believe that models are 5'11, weigh 110 lbs. and look striking. That is just not normal. People need to be reassured that beauty is real, not just a tall stick they see in magazines.

I am 5,3 and 105 i have wanted to be a model for a long time, people crushed my dreams on this people said im too short for this, but i dont want to believe this,i will not give up.i want this way to bad to give up,i hope that shorter people will be able to model, this would be the most incrediable dream ever.It would make me feel like i have a chance at something im good at.please make this come true, shorter people being able to model.it would be everything..

I really dont get it..I mean their is plus size models, and thinner models, theirs gourgeous and girls that arnt so much, theirs tall models why cant their be shortt!..

watch it happen baby
i dont want to say my name
but in two to four years
i will change the fashion world
i promise

I'm 5'7 and I certainly don't think even I would have much of a career. Modeling is the only industry where you can't practice, or work really hard to get what you want, you seriously just need the 'right' genetics. I think the worst part is, that so many models just do it to make money, and for something to do. There are tons who aren't nearly as passionate about it as the shorter girls who would never be given the opportunity.

I think the industry is rediculous in its standards of what a high fashion model should look like. All those women are 'giant skeletons' compared to the average American woman. I personally don't know ANYONE who looks like that. I think if your going to advertise clothing for normal people you should use normal people, that means fat, short, and even thick women [with asses]; because lets face it, thats what you'll see EVERYDAY walking down the street. N THATS REAL!!

i have been looking online at people's comments about short models and being 5'4.5 i so agree!! i want to model like fish wants water but unfortunately it won't happen. why? because enough of us haven't come together and made a loud enough voice. the one comment about how people can control their weight, that was brilliant! Every day there are millions of commercials for food encouraging people to eat. So "America" feels guilty so then it becomes discrimination, so here comes the "plus size" market when in reality most of the people designing and making the clothes, and the people who organize the fashion show and the people who attend the fashion show, hell everybody but the models are average people with average weight and height. and who buys the clothes? average people!!
I babble on to say where is our voice. if they don't want to open up a door for us then may we should boycott!! if all short people stopped buying designer clothes until they begin to cater to us like they do everyone else then maybe they would hear us.
Extreme i know but unless someone with money and clout opens that door for short high fashion models and stars an agency lowering height standards what else is there? who says short isn't high fashion. most of the world is short so that is like saying that most of the world lacks high fashion capability and i resent that since i live in this world!! How about you?

I had am 5'6 no tall but by no means short! I sent my pictures off to Storm Agency in London, and they rang asking for mor pictures, but I didnt send them becuase I knew I was too short.

the most beautiful girls i have seen are very normal height as 5.2".to me those tall models on the catwalk are like horses.im 5.7.
all beautiful girls of less then 5.6" dont be disappointed i think people are getting fedup of sterio type and soon you,ll have a chance in fashion modelling.anyone who has set those standards of hight for modelling was some one mentally sick, who would ignore a beautiful doll like little girl because she is not as tall as a camel?
stuart

to me realy tall and skinny is akward and kina ugly looking! theres plus-size models now why cant the network people live with the fact that were human beings not robots and give women who are 5'2 or w/e a chance??!! im not giveing up and never will! ive asked why cant there be short runway modelsto many poeple and ive never got someone saying there shouldnt be.

have you ever tried grouth enhancements
there are for athletes

I think that it would be nice to see short models. I mean most guys like shorter women...and short people never get their time to shine. In plus all these tall boney girls are giving the female teenagers or whoever the wrong ideas by starving themselves or losing weight the wrong way. I would love to see short models!!!

Oh my god....I am sooo upset that i can't be model because of my shortnes.I Mean, i am very pretty and i am very skinny and i have all the model measurements except the tallness.HOW UNFAIR!The industry should really do somenthing 'bout it, QuiCK!!!Because i wanna Shine through the Industry! And, by the way...i was Mini-Miss at the age of 7, and i was the shortest of all people, and i still WON!!!No.1! Please, anyone reply if you know any agencies seeking for beautiful,14 years old, short, petite girl half Turkish and Russian. My name is Lidiya..

I totally agree with all of you guys. I am 5'6 and have a great portfolio for print, but I just started doing petite runway. I don't know how it is in other states or countries, but in California there are agencies that help our shorter models. I would love to get in contact with any designers out there who would like me to model their clothes in shoes. My website is www.madalinacoman.com and lately I have been specializing in Macy's petite runway shows and David Bridal's shows. I am trying to get to know more San Francisco/San Jose Bay Area designers. Much love and success for all of us petite girls.

to mini miss
can you give the names of those agencies
and where in california

i have always wanted to be a model. everyone tells me i should. but...im only like 5'3". urg...i hate that models have to be so dang tall! i really dont see why there cant be a place high in the industry where petite models can go.

I am 5'4" And my whole life poeple have been telling me i should pursue a career in modeling because of my unique looks, sexy body and great personality.(ONE PROBLEM...TECHNICALLY TWO/THREE INCHES TOO SHORT) I Have done lots of unpaid modeling for photos and hair shows to gain the experience. Howerever there really arn't any true operunities for shorter models. NO MATTER HOW MUCH TO SPEND ON CONSTANTLY UPGRADING YOUR PORTFOLIO. I beleive that the industry is unrealistic.. by always using women.. and men for that matter with SUCH great hights. The truth is, that most women are medium /short with realistic measurements. Its not right to show the world and our younger generations that its "great" to be 5'9" with a 25 inch waist and 30" hips. Im not saying everyone is born, to model but many of us are, and our measuments are very realistic, but we are over seen by the modeling agencys because we dont look unusual (AND BY THAT I MEAN UNATURAL BECAUSE OF OUR PROPORTIONS) It shouldnt be the fact that your tall and skinny that makes you a model... it should be the talent.. in your pictures, your walk, how you sell yourself for the designers clothing or the commericial shoot. Because many of us "Short people" could sell YOUR product better than the skinny, usually unhealthy/unhappy, high maintenance models. And thats the truth. So please. anyone who wants a model of real proportions and TALENT, help there be more opotunities for us real, but unique and beautiful models.Never give up shorties.xoxoxo Stevie

I love all the surport of all you pretty ladies, I have not known that there was a strong force in all to change this. by the way wouldn't it be cheaper to make the clothes too a smaller porportional size?, you know the gliz and glamour of those fabrics out there and the designers too wouldn't thay like to save and multiply on quality and quanity. I always thought of being a fashion maker by the time iam 36. you know I would start a petite runway. we can't do the railway...lol but be inspired for the petway...meow

i´m 5´4 and i would love to be a model.. but unfortunately i don´t seem to fit in the high fashion standards.. it think it´s quite unfair... i mean there are tall models, skinny models, plus size models, why not petite models?? i mean we are the majority.. it´s really rare to see a girl whose 5´11 now a days... i really think someone should step up and make us feel proud, someone we can relate to... i mean every time i look at clothing catalogs i don´t even look at the stuff that much because I think that i´m not tall and i would never look good like those models in the magazines and that utterly wrong, not only me but every short women goes through that .. we are beautiful and graceful and we should have the same opportunities.. (i would love to go to a store, look trough a catalog and think that a petite girls are advertising it)

I agree with all of the real women out there. In reality we are the ones who shop at the stores and pay into the latest fashions. I am 43 and 5'2 and have been told that I could model, I am from NYC and have been told this since I was a teenager. I was watching the new Kim Alexis show She's got the look and I was so proud of Hope the 5'5 aspiring model who went out to represent the shorter girls out there, she was eliminated but she proved that shorter woman could model and for a few weeks lived out here dreams. God bless you Hope!

my opinion on the article about how the reason that there are very few petite runway models is because of the proportioinal fit and the way they could make the clothes look overwhelming is stupid. I mean sure some petite models might not be right for runway but still right for photohraphy modeling, but there are A LOT of very well shaped and proportioned for runway. and you are very right with the fact that they should look as good as tall models if the clothes are desighned for their size. Personaly i dont see the problem the industry has with petite runway moldes anyway if your above everybody that sees you and your usually wearing heels, and if they would get over that their next problem woud be the way they look in the clothes but they just have to realise that it wouln't be a problem if they would desighn their line in the whole range of short and tall because...lets face it..not everybodys tall and the majority of females are petite..so when people see that it wont do any good at all for the line because it will not fit them ANYWAY. I would like the industry to get over that and relise the fact that it will only do them good to invite petite models to the runway..and i would like to be one haha :-)
