I’ve been meaning to blog about this, but somehow it slipped my mind... Not too long ago Seth Godin had a post titled “Wanting What You Don’t Have” and immediately I thought of women across America - heck, everyone in the world - who want what other people have. It starts at a young age when you tell your parents, “Well, my best friend has it! I want it too!”
My friend tells me that whatever her son gets, be it a new bike, a DVD player, or what have you, their little neighbor next door “copycats” and has his parents buy exactly what her son has. This little neighbor kid wants to “be cool” too, you know.
And this is why consumer debt is at an all time high. Retailers don’t care. They’ll continue to push their credit cards on you. Fashion magazine ads will still continue to taunt you into buying what you don’t need. But it’s not their responsibility to keep track of what you spend. That’s up to you.
Well, I’ve gone a little off track from what I initially wanted to tell you
about Seth’s post. He referred to an article that said that nowadays, women preferred plasma TV’s over diamonds. Which brings us back to perception - people want things that are perceived as valuable. Ten years ago it was diamonds, now it’s TV’s - what’s next? In fashion it’s the Birkin or Louis Vuitton bag...What will it be ten years from now, I wonder? For me, it'll still be the Birkin :)
