The Sartorialist has pictures of different men and their socks which 
leads me to believe that it really doesn't matter if your socks match your pants or shoes. From a worldly perpective, that is. If someone gives you flack for wearing maroon socks with blue pin-striped pants, you can say, "Hey, this is how the Brits do it!" Just another example of how style is what you make it. I love it.
I don't know what it is...but I find it fascinating when I see a man wearing argyle socks. It tells me that he is fun and adventurous.

No socks! (Unless I'm working out in sneakers and then I wear little short socks.) But I'm a girl.
I'd like a guy who isn't afraid to wear argyle and look a little preppy or nerdy. Actually, on guys, the nerd's actual look isn't anything as nice as preppy!
