Kathleen over at Fashion Incubator addresses an issue that I'm sure is on the minds of many aspiring designers out there....how to get publicity. You're a small indie designer that wants to do a show - but how do you get noticed? This is what Kathleen says:
"If I were you, I would try to get as much local press as possible. Try to get local newspapers and publications to mention the fashion show to get better attendance. I would hire, or barter with, a photographer to take pictures of the show, and send those to local publications (along with a press kit) with the hopes that maybe it would fit in with a story they were running, or maybe they would be interested in doing a special piece on a local designer. In other words, crawl before you walk, walk before you run." Read more..
Karren over at Entwinements also adds to the conversation...
"My rate of attaining publicity is directly related to the quality of the IMAGES that I produce of my own work. I produce the images, share them with PR companies, and if they find they intriguing they might use them. None of the magazines or other print media I have had the good fortune to be published in has ever generated images on their own, they always use mine."
It's all about baby steps. I've had people ask me why I don't approach Nordstrom or Macy's to see if they'll sell my jewelry in their stores, but I really had to step back and look at the bigger picture. Was I ready for the big time? Did I have the resources, the time, and the people to make mass amounts of jewelry? Sure, the money is good if you sell to the masses, but would I lose that part of me that wanted to stay unique?
There's fierce competition in the industry. But hey, if you want it bad enough, it will happen for you. That's the optimist in me speaking. If you're real serious about making it big in the industry, simply write down your goals...that'll set the ball in motion.

Great advice!
