"Generation Y" and Denim Purchases
I’m not one to put much weight on research statistics, especially when they don’t say how many people were actually surveyed.  However, I came across this press release at The National Retail Federation’s website that I thought would be of interest.  SLANT conducted a survey of “Gen Y” shoppers and found:

“…41 percent of those polled typically spend more than $100 on each denim purchase. Nearly one in three (30.9%) spend between $50 and $99, while more than a quarter (28.2%) spend less than $50 on a pair of jeans.

When it comes to purchasing denim, women are willing to spend a little more for their favorite brands. The majority of females (68.4%) age 17-26 typically spend between $50 and $150 on jeans, though more than one in ten (12.5%) will spend upward of $150.  Men, on the other hand, prefer to spend less on their denim choices, with nearly half (41.3%) of those polled typically spending less than $50 and one in four (26.1%) spending between $50 and $99.”

I would fall in the category of people who spend less than $50 on a pair of jeans.  I still don’t have a pair of premium jeans only because I think, well, I could have one pair of “really nice” jeans or I could buy a pair of jeans, a top, and perhaps even a pair of shoes too!

Sidebar:  I had no idea who they were referring to when they said “Gen Y”, so I checked out Wikipedia for a definition.  It’s very weird to me that we have all these names for generations…Must we be always putting a label on everything?

You are a genuine breath of fresh air! I, as you know, don't have $100+ jeans either, although I've been thinking about it alot more lately. I just cannot justify the cost per wear.

Thanks for sharing the research. I think it's interesting, but I don't really have time to look for it myself.

I can't believe I'm in Generation Y! I kind of thought I was in Gen X. I'm in a different generation from my 3 years older cousin. Wrong wrong wrong. At least I'm not in the same one as my mum as I actually thought. I really feel like I relate more with the few years older than few years younger! (Although I see a different timeline on Wikipedia than the other source I found, so goodness, I'm still with my cousin. And then there's the Boomerang Generation ... this is weird.)

I spend between $45 and $90 on denim. But this generation consists of people mostly a lot younger than we are (I can't believe generations last 20 years). Teens and younger do NOT spend over $100 on jeans! Do they?! My littlest cousin is 16 and she is not allowed to spend more than $30. Eek! Well, her mom pays, but that's horrifying! LOL.

No, forget it. I'm making my own generation. It's for the 20s and 30s. Starts 1965ish to 1885ish.

What to call it?

geez, i'm still wearing the jeans i wore in college--6 years ago! i haven't purchased jeans in a while...

Hey guys,
Im a 24 year old male who apprieciates
good denim. Living in Los Angeles we see alot of new up and coming designers starting thier own denim line. Its become alittle overwhelming, however i love denim and yes its unfortunate that demin is highly priced. But as that old cliche goes, "you get what you pay for" BTW check out The Red Lemon Store in West Hollywood, Ca. They have great denim such as 575, Frankie b., Evisu just to name a few. They just recently recieved their shipment from House of dereon by Beyonce. Very impressive.. Check out there website: www.theredlemonstore.com
