Is the U.S. the Standard of Fashion?
The Bargain Queen dropped by the other day to put in her two cents about the fashion over  in Australia.  I find it interesting that she says that “Australia's fashion industry tries hard, but we're not on a par with the U.S. yet.”

Why is it interesting?  Because many of us view the U.S. as setting the
Mercedes Australian Fashion Week.jpg “standard” in fashion.  I think that each country is unique in their own way and that no one country is “better” than another.  There are many designers around the world who are creative and we have to remember that most of the fashion in the U.S. isn’t necessarily made in the U.S. anyways. Besides, like I’ve said before, I think that Italy is the fashion capital of the world ;)

In my honest opinion, I think that fashion in the U.S. is just too commercial.   Everything - well, almost everything - is massed produced which leaves us looking like a herd of cows in the pasture....with a couple purple cows thrown in.  This has caused me to view fashion from other countries as “exotic” - much more exciting than fashion in the U.S.

I don't mean to sound like I'm anti-Australian fashion. As I said before, there are some things we do extremely well -- for a young industry, we've produced a few very solid creative talents, and our surfwear companies have been influential world-wide.

I would like to see a little more of that US-style commercialism over here though! It's often way too hard to find what I want, even when I can afford to splurge. Plus ecommerce barely exists here, so if I want to order something great online, it usually has to be shipped from overseas.

I guess that's the challenge in a small country though -- there just aren't enough people to make it financially sound to cater to odd niche customers like me :)
