Once Again, The Soapbox on Modeling
Designer Ella of Kiss Me Stace has a post that stirred up some thought.  Actually, to be honest, it got my blood going because this is a subject that I apparently have a passion for.

Once again, we come back to this notion of having “standards” in the modeling industry.  You have to be such and such height and weigh like a feather.  It all goes back to the media and how “they” have brainwashed us into thinking that being tall and skinny is to be
skinny model.jpg “beautiful”.

Whether you believe it or not, much of life is about mind games and each of us in some form or another is part of a “game”.  Whether it’s the game of being “fashionable”, the game of being “successful” in the fashion industry, or the game of being the most creative designer... My point is, I don’t know how the modeling industry evolved into a skinny world, but the game in this industry is to see who can be the skinniest.  And I’m sick of it.

Ok...I’ll get off my soapbox.  Back to the regularly scheduled program...

I am tired of the the stereo type skinny, half dead looking corpse the industry uses for models. We are not all one size, one color or even without disabilities. The industry has a one track mind, and it is up to us the "real everyday person" to stand up and make a change. It's time for a revolution in the fashion industry. Let us everday people whether you are full figured, short, tall or disabled take a stand and let the fashion world know we are tired of the stereo type. We want what's real, what we can relate to. And let young teens know it's okay to be yourself, you don't have to have that almost non-existant body to feel good about yourself. Fashion shouldn't hurt!! And that's my 2 cents!!!

the picture is totally disgusting.

Well being a 15 year old girl...and fully shaped...im not fat im not skinny im juss avarage..im happy with myself.. but seeing pictures like this its like dangg is this what im supposed to look like??? im just tierd of going threw magazines and seeing stuff like this. This isent what im supposed to look up to..what happen to lookin natural??? She just looks like she has some kind of desiese..

well, i feel that it is hard try to be your self and be what the world say is beautiful. but you now i don't have the top model shape. but i love my self and who i am. you just can't let what people think or say get to you. because if you do you will never get any where in this world. love your self and be happy with what GOD gave you.

I appreciate all your thoughts on this! People tend to be pretty passionate about this subject. I truly believe that
beauty is within
and have created another blog dedicated to the suject.

im a 16 year old girl, and this IS whats been molded inside every young girls head for a long time. that thin is beautiful.its caused me to set unreal expectations for myself and has been very draining. i feel as if i will never be quite thin enough. i hate feeling this way, but how can we be happy if society only approves of one kind of beautiful???.

That picture was discusting becuase ever since i have started watching americas next top model i have thought you have to be skinny and you dont you just have to be in shape...Im from dawson creek B.C and i have always wanted to model but i dont have any money to do it.

I think that Tyra is a reallt insiratinal person and she shows the world alot of the bad stuff going on. I am 18 ans i am a mother who is not that skinny i don't want my baby girl to grow up aspiring to be like that girl in the picture who is beautiful but sick at the same time everyone has inner beauty and if we don't let others shape our outter beaty we will be okay.

yea, i agree that pic. is disturbing to look at! i jsut wish society could come to thier sense + relaize that inner beauty is a beautifull thing + being yourself is a good thing at least for me it is. Im average gurl short + sassy you know? But it's hard to be happy w/this desiease being considered "america's bueaty" right? dont you agree?

being sexy doesn`t mean being thin..that girl in the pic may think she`s sexy `coz of her thinness but for me i see sickness; and it`s not pleasing to the eyes! it`s about time to change the wotrld`s perception of being sexy!!!

How tall and what is the wieght that a model required to be?

I think that girls need to look at themselfs and relise that they are beautiful just as they are.......you dont need the bowtox, boobjobs, chin injection and all the rest of the crap you can get......it could cause some abd reactions later on in your life....if your nam dont like you for who you are than get rid of him!!!!!

I DON'T THINK THAT'S HOW A MODEL SHOULD LOOK THE GIRL IN THE PIC HAS A VERY BEAUTIFUL FACE (LITERALLY) BUT, COME ON IF THE MODELING INDUSTRY IS PROMOTING FEMALES OF TODAY TO LOOK THAT WAY IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED A MODEL IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE WORLD. THEIR BETTER OFF SAYING YOU HAVE TO LOOK UNHEALTHY TO BE CONSIDERED A MODEL. SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE HAS AN EATING DISORDER, COME ON YOU CAN'T HONESTLY TELL ME SHE LOOKS HEALTHY. SHE IS A VERY BRAVE GIRL TO HAVE HER PIC POSTED ONLINE BASICLY FOR UGLY COMMENT'S THROWN AT HER.

At first seeing that pic made me "admire" her- not of her thinness, but her self-discipline. But on the second thought, self-discipline is good for her if she add more flesh to her body. I agree, that kind of thinness is too far-out! Most of the women I see around me weighs over 150, and I dont see them ugly. I see them as real and beautiful in their own special way. However, while we are engrossed in fighting against the world's standard of being beautiful, we should the positive side of not letting excess fat get into our bodies. For one thing, it leads to diseases. Self-discipline counts here, bec. it is needed to avoid having an appetite that could destruct us, physically and emotionally (being chubby and overly fat cause low self-esteem).
It's best to accept ourselves for who we really are, and stop comparing ourselves to others because we'd only be frustrated or bitter. Most of all, we should maintain a healthy body. Not skinny, but healthy.

I honestly cannot imagine bringing my weight down to this extreem for a career in modeling. It's as if beautiful women are not excepted as is. We have a culture that is focused on perfection, which has caused us all to feel not good enough. Thank you Tyra for rising about the "status quo" and becoming a vibrant beauty in your own right.

I always wanted to be a model, it was something that always fascinated me, i even began to be anorexic because of that, i thought that to be beautiful i needed to be skinny, 5 years went since my incident of becoming a model, and i never been so happy with myself has i am today... I learn to respect my body and my soul, i still have that little wish to become a model, but at the same time i think that i wouldn't abdicated my life for a contract as a model not even if it was the best agency, i would like to send a message to all the girls who want to become models never think that beauty is to be skinny, life is much more than that just enjoy yourselfs

Models are skinny because it sells. This is what consumers want to see, as of now. Commercialism does have a great effect on the general mass's perception of beauty, but vice versa is also true, and probably came first. The consumers have a huge effect on commercialism and products. No marketing business would go through such trouble to make a product that won't sell. And no magazine or clothing company would go through such trouble to find and maintain thin models to feature in ads that won't sell. This is simple economics. So, if you want to criticize anything, criticize the consumer's perception of beauty for generalizing it to one extreme, not the marketing system for promoting it, because for their businesses to survive, they must market what sells.. It is unfair, also, to criticize thin models, without any personal knowledge. Many models are naturally thin because of their metabolic rate. One's basal metabolic rate is usually by far the highest form of caloric disposal.

just because someone is thin doesnt mean they are unhealthy. people werent meant to be overweight.
