Why I Think Wal-Mart's Apparel Sales Are Slow
I’ve talked before (see below) about Wal-Mart’s campaign to provide more fashionable clothing in their stores... Well, now it seems that their efforts aren’t making progress.  This article reports that Wal-Mart (WMT) has reported slow apparel sales.

I visited Wal-Mart the other day and took a look at their Metro 7 line of clothing.  I do have to admit that the clothing looks pretty
Metro-7.jpg well-made and fashionable.  However, with anything in retail, it’s your presentation that inspires the customer to purchase from you.  How you display your merchandise affects the perception of the products.

So, does Wal-Mart have a compelling visual display?  In a word - No.  Although the clothing is better, the display isn’t visually appealing. There’s nothing there to actually draw me into the clothing department.

What do you think?

You make an excellent point. I'm a retail store manager and visual trainer. My company realized, in the past year, that how product is displayed and presented has a lot to do with how well it will sell. Merchandise displays have to present the company's complete belief in the product. If the company doesn't believe it or buy into it, then the customer certainly won't.

Walmart also is not known for being a design pioneer. Look at Target. They had established themselves as pro-design early on which gave thme the clout to get famous designers on board like Cynthia Rowley and Isaac Mizrahi. Target also has Go International where they promote fashion designers from overseas. Walking into a Walmart you don't get the feeling of design. The experience is not as compelling as Targets.

Manta and Stephanie,

I agree, Walmart and its visual merchandising has never been their forte to begin with. They're main thing is to sell in bulk. The experience for me has always been to get in and get out. Walmart definitely needs a different strategy... Thanks for reading!
