Sign of the Times: Retailers Report a Slow October

According to this article at MSN, apparel retailers are reporting slow October sales this year.  Well, in my experience in retail, I remember that every October was a bit slow as people recover from the September summer clearance sales and are waiting for the holiday season to kick in. 

However, this may be just the sign of the times.  Is there just too much competition nowadays?  Is the market starting to thin out a little?  As more clothing websites pop up, perhaps people are indeed doing more shopping online.  Amazon.com was reported as the number one retailer with the best customer service, so are more people shopping at Amazon for their clothing now?
