Unneccessary Information?

I just read a little news tidbit about Pete Doherty signing on with a UK clothing brand, Gio-Gio, to design some clothes for them. Well, what really disturbed me about the article is this snippet:

“The 27-year-old Babyshambles frontman, who is struggling

to overcome his drug addiction and who has been in trouble with the law, will wear the brand's exclusive designs at a planned gig in a secret London location before Christmas.”

So, the main story here is that Doherty will be designing the clothes for Gio-Gio, right? Do we really need to know that he has a drug addiction and has been “in trouble with the law”? Is that necessary information? Why not give us some credentials on why he would be a good designer for the company?
