When Counterfeiters Go Too Far
Yesterday I went to Borders Bookstore to do a little bit of writing.  Walking into the store, my eyes fell on the ever so-colorful book, “Freakonomics”.  Up until today I hadn’t heard of the book, but the jacket cover piqued my interest, so I thought I would browse through the book in between blog postings.

Ok, so the book doesn’t really have anything to do with fashion per se, but I did find out about the blog that coincides with the book, so I paid a visit and came upon this post about counterfeit zippers. Apparently U.S. Customs got a hold of thousands of Chinese-made denim jeans that had counterfeit “YKK” zippers on them.

Now, how the heck do you determine whether or not a zipper is counterfeit?

Fashion designers thought they had issues with counterfeit fashion...

I heard of Freakonomics. There was a 20/20 special on it; really neat and interesting as I recall. I'll check out the blog!

(Coach uses YKK zippers.)

Oh I should also say that brands of zippers, like RIRI and LAMPO, are faked in order to fake bags.

Freakanomics was big a few years ago when people like Pat Robertson & Bill Bennett were quoting from it as an excuse justify to aborting black babies. Of course they didn't put it as bluntly as I just did. Caused much controversy as I remember.

It’s caused too much controversy as I remember.

When I started checking the zippers on my clothes, it seemed slightly more then half had the YKK imprint. Then I looked closer, some have a brand name on the tab, but YKK is printed on the body of every zipper I've looked at! It's actually, I'm discovering, quite common for a company to have a virtual monopoly on particular products. I did some freelance work with a small family business who are the sole producer of a clip used in large construction projects. Often, if the quality and price are right, monopolies like these exist without anyone really noticing. Interesting post.
