Achilleas Constantinou, one of the founding members of the BFC (British Fashion Council) offers his thoughts on the recent decision by the council - not imposing a ban on ‘size zero’ models at London Fashion Week which will take place next month. ![]()
According to Achilleas, they have been “accused of cowardice, hypocrisy, negligence and of 'doing nothing' to address this serious issue” and that “I think it only fair to point out that this issue is not as straightforward or as easy to resolve as the commentators would have everyone believe.”
The BFC debated on what to do and in the end they concluded that yes, models must be discouraged from walking the catwalk, but they still didn’t want to outright ban them.
“Milan and Madrid can do what they want but the BFC is not going to jump on the bandwagon because of public pressure. That would be wrong.”
This is not some kind of presidential campaign or football game. There is no bandwagon here. This is a serious issue and a majority of the people seem to agree that something needs to be done. And if you want to talk about public pressure...what about the fashion industry’s pressure on young women to look a certain way in order to become a model?
