Has fashion week lost its edge? Julie Fredrickson of Almost Girl offers her perspective on how the whole system of Fashion Week in New York has changed. No longer is it for the press and buyers, it seems that the fashion industry has turned into a mini-Hollywood where the paparazzi and celebrities have taken over. The runways have turned into big marketing campaigns (as I have always thought they were) where celebrities sit in the front row waiting to be "seen". Is it really about the fashion anymore...or is it about catching a glimpse of so-and-so at Marc Jacobs?
Julie says this which I completely agree with:
"...But until we change the system from the bottom up fashion week is about as broken as can be. Buyers have too much to see, press is either over invested or too little invested, and the consumer is confused by fashion saturation eating up interest in real fashion purchases and driving us to buy too much crap. And while they may not like it unless it is brand new, some of us are confused by why we need to be so frenzied in the first place."There were so many fashion shows to see, it's no wonder that people are so confused! Why can't a few designers get together and just do one big performance similar to what the Grammy's did last night? Speaking of which...stay tuned later because I'll be blogging about Grammy fashion!
