In response to The Budget Fashionista’s question, no, I don’t think a thirteen-year-old needs a Louis Vuitton purse. I do believe, however, that each person is entitled to the good things in life. I had a Gucci purse at the age of thirteen, but that’s before I even really knew what Gucci stood for. ![]()
Nowadays young people are pursuing all these material things simply to look “cool” or to be part of the “in” crowd. I think it’s ok to give these luxury items as gifts if the receiver knows that their value as a person does not depend on what purse she carries.
It's the responsibility of the parent to nurture and feed wisdom to their kids so that they know their true worth. Kids should also be aware of how fashion marketing works and parents should know what their kids are reading!
I also agree that kids shouldn’t get everything they want. They lose sight of the true value of the dollar. They have to understand that they, too, have to work to get what they want and prove themselves as responsible people.
Any thoughts?
