Diamonds have long been a girl’s best friend, but many of us never really give much thought as to the origins of these diamonds and what it takes to get those diamonds to us. Diamonds are big business with quite a bit of controversy surrounding the industry.  Have you ever thought that maybe that someone may have died over that diamond ring you’re wearing?  Did you know that diamond trading could possibly be linked to activities such as money laundering, drug trafficking and war?   

Well, it looks like authorities are starting to crack down on such activities.  Antwerp, Belgium, which houses the famous diamond district, has been under serious investigation and quite a few of the diamond companies have been raided and millions of dollars of diamonds have been seized by the local police.   Many traders have begun to relocate to other cities such as Dubai and Tel Aviv.  

All this controversy has sprouted up companies that now offer fair trade diamonds.  I still haven’t seen that movie Blood Diamond, but I think it’s a great first step in educating people about what’s really going on…
