
Imagine being blind and having a website to go to that would help you shop for clothing? Two women, Jaimen Brill and Asmah Abushagur, are developing a website called White Cane Label to help the visually impaired coordinate outfits and shop for clothing. The two announced their proposal for this nonprofit company during Rome fashion week a couple weeks ago and the website is set to launch this coming fall.![]()
This is a brilliant idea because according to the American Foundation for the Blind, there are approximately 10 million blind people in the U.S. alone. Who knows how many more there are in other countries, but the numbers certainly represent an opportunity to help them.
“Fashion has the power to bridge or separate people,” says Wilma King, associate professor of public relations at RIT and co-founder of Fashion for Good with Giancarlo Polenghi, corporate executive officer of Marketing Communication Mix in Florence. “I think the fashion industry is looking for innovative and sincere approaches to social responsibility. I have every confidence it will embrace and love White Cane Label.”
