Hilary Alexander, the fashion editor of Telegraph.co.uk, shares some tips on creating a couture look on a budget:

• Never wear anything that's 'in' now; couture is timeless, not trendy
• Invent a headpiece; millinery is essential
• Head-to-toe colour - teal as in Chanel; gold like Gaultier
• Red alert - Valentino Red is known the world over
• Pick a historical muse: Empress Josephine like Lacroix
• Go wild - fake animal prints like Givenchy
• Back to black - every couture collection has an LBD
• Find a feather - haute couture always features plumes on sleeves, necklines, hems
• Button up - jewelled buttons from antique haunts can transform a suit
  

I believe the key to creating a couture look is the details.  Anything that can be added, like beading or a touch of lace here and there, can lend itself to a more luxe look.  I also have to agree with the inventing a headpiece.  I’ve always believed that accessories can make or break an outfit.

Below is a video of a place in Miami where you can design your own couture shoes.  Although these shoes aren’t really for the fashionista on a budget, I think the price is worth it if you can get a pair of shoes that are made just for you!
