
As long as there are uber-rich people on this planet, I don’t think couture clothing will ever really die. There will always be a market for couture - albeit a somewhat small market. However, when you’re selling dresses at $50K a pop, it might be ok to sell just two or three dresses, right? I recently read about a real estate developer who builds these huge mansions that only 50,000 people on this earth can afford. Basically, it’s the same way with haute couture.
Besides, I do believe that haute couture is more about art than it is about apparel. Couture runway shows are not just for publicity, they are also opportunities for fashion designers to stretch their creativity and show the world that they’re not just your run-of-the-mill designer. It is their way of building credibility in the fashion industry.
