Anatomy of a Fashion Ad

Rory Tahari dropped by the other day and left a comment here - at least I think it was really her. (You never know these days.) Regardless, I thought I should share what I feel makes for a good fashion ad...

I came across this Nina Ricci ad in Glamour which made me stop and pay attention.  There's something magical and dreamy-like about this ad.  It tells a story.  Fashion ads, or any type of marketing for that matter, should evoke emotion from the customer.  That's how you capture attention.  That is what makes women stop turning the pages of a fashion magazine - at least for me it works.

Nina Ricci Ad Fall 2007

Even the Nina Ricci Fall 2007 runway show was brilliant!  The hair...the ambience...Who says details don't matter?

Here's another ad that tells a story...

Diesel Ad Fall 2007

What I learned from art class in college is that a good composition has some sort of motion.  In this Diesel ad we see a woman walking away from a guy.  She's obviously angry at this guy and she storms off in her cute outfit and handbag.

Of course, the ads should focus on the product(s) being sold, but you also want to stand out and spread a message or tell a story.  Women remember stories...not ads with women laying around.  Those ads were probably created by men who like those kinds of things ;)

Who is the designer of the gorgeous pink dress?

Hi Scarlett,

Thanks for stopping by. I'm going to take a guess and say that Nina Ricci designed that being that it's a Nina Ricci ad...
