The Difference Between Fashion Blogs and Fashion Magazines

Last night as I waited in line to pay at the grocery store, my eyes grazed the latest cover of Elle Accessories. It was calling me, so of course, I must follow that calling.

The way I feel when browsing through a fashion magazine is how a painter would feel when slappin' paint on a canvas.  Zen - absolute zen.  Now, before you jump to any conclusions about me and how I'm just some fashion-crazed blogger who thinks peace means reading a fashion magazine, then read on...

Elle-Accessories.jpg Browsing through a fashion magazine is nothing like browsing through a fashion blog.  When I'm reading blogs sometimes I feel like a cat on crack - I'm just all over the place.  For some reason I speed read as if I'm going to miss something and hours later my mind is a complete blur.  However, when I'm reading a magazine I feel very much at peace.  Maybe it's because I'm lounging on the couch and not sitting in front of a bright computer screen hunched over in a not-so-ergonomic chair.  Or perhaps it's because I've realized that I'm living in a time of some of the greatest geniuses of fashion...

I mainly look at fashion magazines for the pictures - the works of art - but I turn to fashion blogs for some "real" opinions.  It's nice to get an opinion from someone who hasn't been influenced by PR reps or advertisers (although that is starting to change).  As Susie of Style Bubble says:

"[Magazines] disseminate information and plant ideas into my head that I then expand upon in a more personal manner on the blog.  Blogs like mine go about and spout off personal opinions, as opposed to professional opinions in a way that hopefully presents a unique voice amongst the thousands of fashion blogs out there.  Trying to find a personal voice, stance and take on fashion is what I love about a blog and this is something that magazines lack."

The reason I bring all of this up is because there are still many people out there who don't know the difference between a blogger and a "fashion journalist", or someone who writes for a fashion glossy.  Just like Susie, I've been criticized early in my blogging career as someone without any journalistic standards.  Ok, so I never took journalism, but I've been writing in a journal since the first grade - does that count?

This is why I prefer to call myself a fashion writer. I don't write for a big glossy, just regional, and I blog. Isn't a blogger merely a writer who uses a blog as their platform.

Fashion writers run the gamut from reporter of industry news, opinion leaders, trend spotters, service writers, I mean the list goes on and on.

A big blanket "writer" label suits me just fine.

Hi Sandra,

Yes, I've started calling myself a "writer" as well - It's true, a blogger is in essence a writer.
