Black Friday and the Psychology of Shopping

As Black Friday looms ahead for those of you who work in the retail industry, I think back to last year when I waited 3 hours (not 1, not 2, but 3!) in a line to get into Puma.  Never, ever, ever, again!  Somehow I got caught up in the crazy energy that was going on and to this day I have no idea was possessed me during that early morning.

shopping.jpgNo, this Friday I will be at home shopping on the internet, sipping hot cocoa, making jewelry for my customers, and perhaps blogging about how insane it is for people to wait in line at some of these shops when they'll probably have that same sale from now until Christmas.  It's the same kind of insanity that many of us women go through when we wait in line at H&M or Target for the release of a designer's collection.

Ok, maybe "insanity" is a strong word, but how else do you describe it?

As someone who has a keen interest in psychology, I'm fascinated by how the mind works - especially when it comes to shopping.  Check out this article of interest: The Psychology of Shopping

Here's where I've been shopping lately...

It's funny, I have worked in retail for many years, but this year I had several of my customers asked what is black friday? I thought to myself, i really dont know after 20 plus years I had never thought that much about it. So I looked it up, the definition is when the retailer goes from red ink to black ink, so you have Black Friday when all retailers will make tons of money. So there is some strong psychology or mojo at work behind Black Friday. lol

So I worked in retail for years, but we always called it "the day after Thanksgiving"; I never heard the term Black Friday until I entered the fashion blogosphere. My sister and brother in law say that it's supposed to be the first day that most retailers make it into the black for the year. How sad!

Even more sad - people getting up at 4 am or earlier to go shopping!
