The Key to Success When Selling to Department Stores
If you're a fashion designer interested in selling to U.S. department stores, you may find this piece by Lauren Crowe to be of interest.  Recently Crowe attended a talk given by Mary Gehlher where she learns some tips for making sure your collection is a success in department stores.

NordstromsDesignerHandbags.jpg As a designer, I don't have any experience in this area, however, I would agree that meeting in-person with the sales team and buyers is key.  I would recommend talking to the buyer to see if you could do a trunk show where you come in to talk with customers and help the salespeople become more familiar with your brand and its products.  When I worked at Nordstrom, the jewelry department always had trunk shows and it was nice to be able to meet designers in person.

That is a key point, during my stay at Bloomingdales, we would have new unknown venders all the time, like Spanx before the explosion, the creator of Spanx came in and made sure to talk to everyone in the store about her product even if you were selling mens suits she wanted you to have an idea what Spanx were or at least how to find them in the store. It blows me away to think how big Spanx became. The Key after getting through the door is making the sales staff as excited as your are about your product.

Yes, getting salespeople excited is definitely important...When I was at Nordstrom the vendors would often stop by to do presentations and giveaways which often got us excited!
