The Not-So-Glamorous Side of the Fashion Industry
If you've worked in the fashion industry for awhile, you know that it's not all as glamorous as you initially thought.  In fact, we've all heard that the industry can be quite catty and that there are snakes in the trenches.  This goes for any industry, but perhaps more so in the fashion industry.  People are driven by their egos in this business.  Everyone wants to be "cooler", "hipper", "more trendy", and the list of adjectives goes on.   As Mal Sirrah illustrates in this post, "You'll never work in this town again", there are even those play out some kind of role they've seen in a movie.

Out of all the people on your team, I believe that your publicist should be hired with the utmost care and diligence.  I am my own publicist, so I can't really speak about my experience in this area.  However, I do know that a publicist is "the person" who represents your brand on all fronts.  A publicist is a reflection of who YOU are and should therefore have the same values as you do. 

I commend Mal for not allowing another person define who he is.  It's important in this business to have tough skin, so to speak, and to always wear a protective shield.  I, for one, never, ever listen to anything negative someone says about me or anybody else.
