For a little Friday funny, check out Fashionista's post, "How to Model a Handbag".
As I browsed through the latest issue of Vogue all I could do was yawn at some of the recent fashion ads. Same ol', same ol'. They're just not visually stimulating anymore.
Here's someone who's doing ads right: Marc Jacobs.
Ok, some of you may think that this ad is very boring.
After all, it's just a picture of a purse, right? However, hear me out and let me give you two reasons why I think this is smart advertising:1. You don't have to shell out thousands of dollars to hire a model, hairdresser, makeup artist, etc. Want to save money? Ditch the model.
2. The model is distracting anyways. The idea is to sell the handbag, so the focus should be on the handbag, not how pretty or well-dressed the model is. When I read other fashion blogs, it's always about "Did you see WHO is modeling for..??" and not "Did you see that bag in that ad?"

This is really interesting. I do look at bags for bags' sake, so I do prefer the "sans model" approach in creative materials designers and fashion houses produce. That said, online retailers should still include shots with models (or at least a mannequin) to provide an idea for the proportion. I don't know what that additional cost means but I find it more helpful when I'm actually shopping online.
