"Playing dress-up dolls?" I asked. The question didn't need an answer. I already knew. I have to say that it's partly my fault because I was the one who introduced her to the online version of dress-up dolls. It's inevitable that just about every child in America will soon be exposed to the online world and I think companies should be thinking about how to incorporate their marketing efforts to tap into these future fashionistas.
Well, you don't need to tell a company like Mattel (NYSE:MAT) where to set their sights. They've already developed an interactive gaming experience that utilizes one of their star toys: Barbie. BarbieGirls.com already has strong following of over 9 million users, so Mattel's latest creation, Barbie iDesign, should be just as popular.
Barbie iDesign combines high-tech with the girly world of fashion. Users can engage in a "Runway Fashion" mode of play and even create their own fashion in the "Design Studio". To fashion designers this could offer another way to market themselves in the virtual world just like Giorgio Armani has done with Second Life.
