Fashion blogging has become mainstream and there are probably hundreds, if not thousands major fashion blogs in the industry. Many people are doing it for business and some are doing it for fun. With so many people offering information and commentary, it's inevitable that there is going to be differences of opinion. That goes for any niche in the blogosphere. So how do you deal with all that drama?
Well, Coutorture hosted a forum over at BlogTalkRadio not too long ago where Julie Fredrickson, CEO of Coutorture, and Christine of Temptalia share their thoughts and experiences about fashion blogging etiquette and blog gossip. As some of you know Julie has had her share of drama with bloggers and the sometimes catty fashion and beauty industries.
Here are some notes I jotted down while I listened to Julie and Christine:
- Most of the time drama stems from jealousy. Other bloggers may be jealous that your blog is more successful than theirs and you're making money and getting freebies and they're not.
- Be civil and professional at all times. Treat your blog visitors like they are guests in your home...even if you don't like them.
- Accept that, as a blogger, you are now a public figure. Drama comes with the territory. Not everyone is going to like you.
- Blogging is supposed to be fun! You don't have to work with everybody.
My Thoughts:
I have a pretty strong aversion to drama and simply don't tolerate it. Fortunately in my years of blogging I still have yet to find people who have openly expressed their dislike for me. I have had a comment or two saying "Your blog sucks!" which is fine with me. I realize that not everyone is going to agree with what I have to say or like my style of blogging.
I agree with everything that Julie and Christine said. Negativity and jealousy breeds more negativity. Maintain a professional and positive attitude at all times and don't allow other people to bring you down!
