“Wow, 1990 was soooo long ago,” I said to my boyfriend. I was reminiscing about the clothing we wore back then. Daisy dukes, grungy baggy denim, flannel shirts…yikes! The fashion world has come a long way since those days of anti-feminine style and I’m so thankful that we’re going back to classy, glamorous fashion. ![]()
Fashion in 2008 is about getting in touch with that ultra-feminine side within us - at least for women it is. I can’t speak too much on fashion for men as I’ve yet to really look at any of the runway fashion shows for men (I know, shame on me. I promise to have some men‘s fashion commentary soon.)
The state of the fashion industry as I see it now is that we’re moving into an era in which women are becoming more confident in their sense of style. To a certain degree nobody is really following the rules or trends anymore. And when I say nobody I mean nobody. Consumers and fashion designers alike are being more true to themselves. This was evident to me as I looked through coverage of the upcoming fall 2008 fashion season. Besides color, I didn’t notice any real commonalities between the collections.
Younger designers are leading the way in terms of creativity and innovation while veterans, with the exception of one or two, are fading off just a teeny bit. However, that’s not to say that fashion vets’ collections aren’t as strong or as influential as before. Their presence keeps everyone grounded and we can always count on them to bring luxe and elegance to the runways. Oscar de la Renta comes to mind.
As the fashion world heads into 2009, I have a strong feeling that we’re in for many surprises...
