"America's Next Top Model" Spreads to Canada

Beginning May 31st of this year, ten young Canadians will be vying for the coveted title of "Canada's Next Top Model", a sister-show to the successful "America's Next Top Model".  The winner will receive a modeling contract with Sutherland Models and a $100,000 beauty contract with Procter & Gamble.

The show will be hosted by actor and former supermodel, Tricia Helfer, along with an expert panel of judges to include Jeanne Beker, Celebrity Hair and Makeup Stylist, Paul Venoit, and model and runway
coach Stacey McKenzie.

"Canada's Next Top Model" is co-produced by Temple Street Productions and The May Street Group, in association with CHUM Television and CBS Paramount International TV.   For more information, visit: http://citytv.com.

**Update: March 15, 2006

I was informed by a reader that Stacey McKenzie is still a model and not a "former" model, so I have edited this post to reflect that fact.

Once Again, The Soapbox on Modeling
Designer Ella of Kiss Me Stace has a post that stirred up some thought.  Actually, to be honest, it got my blood going because this is a subject that I apparently have a passion for.

Once again, we come back to this notion of having “standards” in the modeling industry.  You have to be such and such height and weigh like a feather.  It all goes back to the media and how “they” have brainwashed us into thinking that being tall and skinny is to be
skinny model.jpg “beautiful”.

Whether you believe it or not, much of life is about mind games and each of us in some form or another is part of a “game”.  Whether it’s the game of being “fashionable”, the game of being “successful” in the fashion industry, or the game of being the most creative designer... My point is, I don’t know how the modeling industry evolved into a skinny world, but the game in this industry is to see who can be the skinniest.  And I’m sick of it.

Ok...I’ll get off my soapbox.  Back to the regularly scheduled program...

The Skinny Models Debate Continues..
According to this article, Karl Lagerfeld has said that the anorexia controversy is a creation of the media and that the increase in obesity in the West was more of a problem.  Either way there’s a problem and regardless, models are still too skinny!

The issue still remains that this standard for modeling in the fashion industry is just unreasonable.  We can argue all day about how people can eat and not gain weight or that some models are just naturally skinny.  The fact is women still think that you have to be skinny to be “beautiful”.  They see these models on the runway and it stays on their mind.  If all you see is skinny models all the time, you’re bound to think that it’s just supposed to be that way.

The modeling and fashion industries really do need to change their perspective on what looks good.  We’ll see it soon enough.  I have this feeling...

Any thoughts?
